Medard was born into Frankish wealth and nobility in Salency, Picardy. In c.505 he was ordained a priest and eventually held the position of Bishop of Vermand until he died at the age of 90. Tradition has it that Bishop Medard relocated the See to Noyon to evade the destruction of the Huns. Historical renderings of Medard show him being protected by the elements by the wings of an eagle, thus he is often invoked as the patron saint for bad weather.
